Kansas City, Apr 30 2024 - The City of Kansas City has announced a new initiative aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods by turning vacant lots into vibrant spaces. The Housing Accelerator program, spearheaded by Third District Councilmember Melissa Patterson-Hazley, is set to transform the Washington Wheatley Neighborhood, covering 95 acres of vacant land, including 45 lots.
Councilmember Melissa Patterson-Hazley expressed the motivation behind the program, stating, “This initiative was born out of my drive from my house on 19th Street to UMKC, where I noticed over 14 vacant lots just on Cleveland Avenue. I knew I wanted to try to solve this issue."
Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, also the Land Bank Board Chair, highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, "Through innovative and creative strategies in utilizing this land, we have the power to cultivate vibrant and thriving neighborhoods that benefit our community.”
City Manager Brian Platt emphasized the impact of the program, stating, "Kansas City's new housing accelerator program will transform abandoned land bank lots into active and productive spaces, targeting Washington Wheatley as the first neighborhood."
The Housing Accelerator Program aims to address issues such as blight, crime, and lack of affordable housing. Qualified parties or developers can purchase lots for $1.00 plus applicable fees, with a focus on infill development that aligns with the neighborhood's aesthetic.
Interested parties must demonstrate expertise in urban redevelopment and engage with the Washington Wheatley Neighborhood Association. Selected applicants commit to constructing homes within 18 months, adhering to building codes, community aesthetics, and emphasizing environmentally friendly construction and owner occupancy.
The success of the Housing Accelerator Program in the Washington Wheatley neighborhood could pave the way for similar initiatives in other parts of Kansas City, showcasing the city's commitment to revitalizing neighborhoods and providing affordable housing solutions.
For those interested in participating, workshops are scheduled for Monday, May 13, and Wednesday, May 15, providing details on the program and application process.
