KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mykus Butler, a 25-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri, has been handed a severe sentence in federal court for his involvement in an armed robbery and carjacking that took place during an illegal drug sale. U.S. District Judge Greg Kays sentenced Butler to 14 years and two months in federal prison without parole.
Butler pleaded guilty to several charges, including aiding and abetting a robbery, aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and aiding and abetting a carjacking. He confessed to contacting the victim under the pretense of buying marijuana and subsequently orchestrating the violent events that unfolded on March 10, 2020.
According to reports, Butler met the victim at a residence in Kansas City, Missouri, with the intention of purchasing marijuana. However, instead of completing the transaction peacefully, Butler brandished a firearm, seized the victim's marijuana and firearm, and with the assistance of two armed accomplices, forcefully removed the victim and a passenger from the vehicle. The victim was subjected to physical violence before managing to escape as one of Butler's associates fired a weapon towards him and the passenger. Butler and his associates then absconded with the victim's car from the scene.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Q. McCarther led the prosecution in this case, which saw collaboration between the FBI, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
