An Olathe, Kansas man, Frank Guereca, has been indicted for stealing 41 firearms from a gun store in Raytown, Mo. Guereca was arrested while crossing the border from Mexico back into the United States and is now facing charges related to the theft.
"We are committed to stanching the flow of illegal firearms on the black market, whether they’re trafficked within the United States or smuggled into Mexico," stated U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore of the Western District of Missouri. Moore emphasized the importance of holding accountable those involved in criminal activities related to firearms.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco highlighted the significance of cooperation with Mexican law enforcement in stopping the flow of firearms across borders. Monaco praised the collaboration with Mexican authorities in linking the stolen firearms to their international transport and recovery.
According to Bernard G. Hansen, Special Agent in Charge of ATF Kansas City, illegal firearms trafficking to Mexico is a top priority for law enforcement agencies. Hansen emphasized that there is no safe haven for individuals engaged in such criminal activities and vowed to investigate and prevent the flow of illegal firearms relentlessly.
Guereca, along with accomplices, is accused of stealing the firearms on June 16, 2023, using a stolen U-Haul for the theft. Several stolen pistols were later recovered in California and Mexico. Guereca was apprehended on April 25 as he attempted to re-enter the United States from Mexico, having crossed the border multiple times since the burglary.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley K. Kavanaugh and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Raytown Police Department. The indictment against Guereca is an accusation, and the evidence will be presented to a federal trial jury for a determination of guilt or innocence.
This incident falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by collaborating with law enforcement agencies and communities. The strategy focuses on building trust, supporting violence prevention initiatives, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes to make neighborhoods safer for all.
