A Sedalia, Mo., dentist, Nohaud Naseef Azan, 66, has been sentenced in federal court for concealing more than $617,000 in earnings from the IRS over a six-year period. U.S. District Judge Roseann A. Ketchmark sentenced Azan to one year and one day in federal prison without parole, along with ordering him to pay $269,517 in restitution to the IRS.
Azan pleaded guilty on Dec. 15, 2022, to one count of attempting to interfere with the administration of internal revenue laws. Following an audit by the IRS in 2011, Azan admitted to cashing patients' checks written out to his dental practice or depositing them into a personal bank account in an attempt to cover personal expenses. It was revealed that Azan cashed or deposited more than 1,000 checks from 2011 through 2018.
According to court documents, Azan used the funds from the cashed checks for personal expenses, including a gambling habit, without reporting them as income on his personal and corporate tax returns. The total tax loss to the IRS for the six-year period amounted to $269,517.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron M. Maness prosecuted the case, which was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.
