Bishop John Hogan, in his book On the Mission, recalled the history of the Mission of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Princeton, stating, "In 1886 a small group of Catholics led by Mr. and Mrs. John Finn, constructed a church 26’ x 36’ in the town of Princeton."

Over the years, the Mission faced challenges, as highlighted in the article, "From later years down to 1970 Catholics living in Princeton found that the closest place for Mass was in Cainsville. For some, attending Mass represented a round trip of 100 miles." However, efforts were made to bring Mass closer to the community, with the first Mass being offered in 20 years in Mercer County in 1965.

The history of the Mission of Immaculate Heart of Mary continued with the purchase of a property in 1971, leading to the establishment of a new church dedicated in May of the same year. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the Mission faced a decline in registered households and weekly Mass attendance in the following years, as indicated in the Pastoral Plan for Deaneries.

Considering the declining numbers and changing demographics, Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr., issued a decree to amalgamate the Mission of Immaculate Heart of Mary with Saint Joseph Parish in Trenton. The decision was made after thorough consultations and examinations, taking into account the good of souls and the future sustainability of the faith community.

The amalgamation aims to address the challenges faced by the Mission, including declining sacramental activity, financial deficits, and an aging community. By uniting with Saint Joseph Parish, the new Parish will be better equipped to serve the faithful and enhance evangelizing opportunities in the region.

Effective June 9, 2024, the Mission of Immaculate Heart of Mary will be united with Saint Joseph Parish, with all rights and obligations accorded by law. The decree ensures the preservation of parish records and the respect of donors' intentions regarding the temporal goods of the Mission.

In conclusion, the amalgamation of the Mission of Immaculate Heart of Mary with Saint Joseph Parish signifies a new chapter for the faith community in Princeton and Trenton. The decision, guided by the Diocesan Bishop and in accordance with canon law, aims to strengthen the faith life of parishioners and ensure a sustainable future for the combined Parish.
