The Kansas City Chiefs continued their training camp preparations on Thursday morning, holding their third practice session as the team looks ahead to the upcoming NFL season. The defending AFC champions conducted various drills and activities at camp, focusing on both offensive and defensive plays.
A portion of Thursday's practice was livestreamed to provide fans who could not attend in person with access to the training camp experience. The stream included analysis of the Chiefs' defensive line and running back groups, along with interviews featuring defensive tackle Chris Jones and running back Isiah Pacheco. The organization has announced plans to livestream three more practices in the coming weeks.
On the field, wide receiver Xavier Worthy caught a deep pass during an 11-on-11 drill, marking another big play for him during this year's camp. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown also recorded a notable catch in Wednesday's practice, while tight end Travis Kelce made a leaping reception over the middle during a 7-on-7 segment. Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice each contributed strong performances, with Rice making a one-handed catch over a defender.
Special teams work featured kicker Harrison Butker successfully converting a 63-yard field goal during live drills that included simulated pressure from defenders. Other special teams segments focused on kickoff returns and further field goal operations.
Defensive highlights included rookie cornerback Melvin Smith forcing a fumble during the "team blitz" period by punching out the ball from a carrier, while defensive end Charles Omenihu deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage.
Head Coach Andy Reid confirmed that Sunday will be the team's first padded practice since last season ended as part of an ongoing "ramp up" period designed to transition players into full-contact football activities. Thursday's session lasted 15 minutes longer than Wednesday’s as part of this process. Tailback Kareem Hunt commented on what to expect when pads go on: "The first day of pads, you have to bring it. Everybody is out here trying to fight for a spot, and people are going to give you their best effort," Hunt said. "It's all for a good cause. We're just trying to make each other better out there, so you just have to bring your game."
Regarding injuries, only offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor, cornerback Kristian Fulton, and tight end Tre Watson did not participate due to being on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list; no other roster members were absent from Thursday’s session.
The Chiefs are scheduled for another non-padded practice Friday before taking Saturday morning off ahead of Sunday's padded workout.
