In recent weeks, Kansas City and the nation have experienced a rise in influenza cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a 29.4% increase in positive influenza tests from clinical labs last week.

Local healthcare professionals note that this uptick is typical for this time of year. Dr. Angela Myers, Division Director of Infectious Diseases at Children's Mercy, explained the pattern: "We saw a big rise in December and then a decrease right and that happens over the holidays and then we had that big snowstorm so there was no school right and so now we are seeing this big rise again which is totally expected."

Children's Mercy Hospital alone recorded 670 cases of influenza in the past week. This figure pertains solely to their hospital system and does not account for other practices around town.
