Children's Mercy Kansas City has announced a substantial $152 million expansion for Children's Mercy Hospital Kansas. This development aims to enhance patient care and improve service access, introducing new clinical programs in Kansas.
Alejandro Quiroga, CEO and President of Children's Mercy, stated, “As the only freestanding pediatric hospital in the state of Kansas, this expansion will allow for even more families to have access to world-class care closer to home.” He added that the expansion represents a commitment to providing the community with the best possible care through modern, integrated facilities.
The first phase, currently in progress, involves expanding surgical services, including renovating the Sterile Processing Department and adding new procedural spaces. This construction phase is expected to conclude by the summer of 2026. Shawn St. Peter, Senior Vice President and Surgeon-in-Chief at Children's Mercy, highlighted the demand these upgrades would meet, particularly in specialties such as ENT, Orthopedics, and Gastroenterology.
Key features of the expansion include a new Medical Office Building set to open in the summer of 2027, hospital renovations for an improved patient and staff experience by 2029, and new service offerings including an Inpatient Rehab, Intensive Outpatient Programs, and a Neuroscience Center of Excellence. Parking and external improvements are also planned to enhance accessibility and wayfinding, with parking and emergency services remaining operational throughout the construction period.
Amy Fallon, President of Regional Operations, stated, “We listened to the needs of physicians and families in this community and the expansion of our Kansas hospital strengthens our capacity to serve the growing pediatric population.” Fallon emphasized the expansion as a commitment to delivering accessible and top-quality healthcare.
