Pope Francis has declared 2025 as a Jubilee Year, emphasizing the importance of hope and renewal. In his announcement, he stated, "We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire..."
The Pope further highlighted the significance of pilgrimage in this Jubilee event. He remarked, "Pilgrimage is of course a fundamental element of every Jubilee event. Setting out on a journey is traditionally associated with our human quest for meaning in life. A pilgrimage on foot is a great aid for rediscovering the value of silence, effort and simplicity of life. In the coming year, pilgrims of hope will surely travel the ancient and more modern routes in order to experience the Jubilee to the full."
Jubilee Years have been celebrated at various intervals throughout Christian history, ranging from every 25 to 100 years. An Extraordinary Jubilee was held by Pope Francis in 2015, marking the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. The last regular Jubilee occurred in 2000, making 2025 the next scheduled celebration.
The upcoming Jubilee Year will feature numerous events, pilgrimages, devotions, and opportunities for mercy worldwide. More information can be found on the USCCB and Vatican websites.
In Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese, there will be an Opening of the Holy Door for this significant occasion on Saturday, December 28.
