The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the recipients of their Week 6 High School Coach of the Week awards for the 2025 season. Blue Springs South High School Head Coach Alan Wilmes from Missouri and Washington High School Head Coach Camron Smith from Kansas were selected for their teams' performances during the fifth week of the high school football season.
Each coach will receive a $500 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation, a Chiefs bucket hat, a certificate of recognition, and a custom game ball. Both are now eligible for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which is determined at the end of the regular season by a panel from the Missouri and Kansas Boards of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association.
Blue Springs South secured a 34-7 victory over Lee's Summit North on October 3, holding their opponent to just 137 total yards. This win marks their first over Lee's Summit North since 2016 and keeps them undefeated at 6-0. The Jaguars have not allowed more than one touchdown in their last four games. They will play Liberty at home on October 10.
Wilmes commented on receiving the award: "This award is a representation of all the hard work our coaches, players, and community do for our program. We are lucky to be surrounded by great people who support us and allow the coaching staff to help these young men excel on and off the field. A big thank you to all who support JagNation."
Wilmes has been head coach at Blue Springs South since 2022 with a record of 22-16. Over his 18-year coaching career, he has led teams to state finals, three semifinal appearances, seven district titles, and ten conference titles. He has now received this Chiefs honor four times.
Washington High School also continued its strong season with a 5-0 start after defeating Atchison 82-44 on October 3. The Wildcats recorded 465 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on just 26 carries, along with four passing touchdowns and over 200 yards through the air. They aim for a 6-0 start when they face Wyandotte next.
Smith reflected on his team's preparation: "My staff and I only had three days to prep for Atchison after a short week because we played on Saturday followed by a gas leak that forced us out of the building on Monday, while Atchison had two weeks. This award validates the effort we put into game planning every week as well as the effort our boys put in to get ready."
Smith is in his sixth year as head coach at Washington High School, where he was previously a student-athlete. His teams have earned a conference title and hosted two playoff games under his leadership. This is his third time being named Chiefs Coach of the Week.
The High School Coach of the Week program is now in its 29th year as a partnership between the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. It recognizes coaches not only for team performance but also for making an impact in student-athletes' lives beyond football.
