The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 20-17 on Sunday, marking their second defeat of the season. The game was closely contested, with both teams posting similar statistics in several key areas.
Kansas City's defense delivered a strong performance, holding the Eagles to just 216 total yards and limiting them to a 5-for-14 conversion rate on third downs. This was Philadelphia's lowest offensive output since Week 6 of the 2021 season. The Chiefs also kept running back Saquon Barkley under 100 rushing yards and restricted the Eagles' passing game to only 94 net yards.
Rookie defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott made his NFL debut and recorded his first career sack by bringing down Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts in the third quarter. Norman-Lott's play highlighted both his effort and discipline as he avoided drawing a penalty after making contact with Hurts.
Despite the defensive showing, several mistakes proved costly for Kansas City. Both teams were nearly even in total plays (Chiefs: 57, Eagles: 58), first downs (Chiefs: 17, Eagles: 16), and penalties (six each). However, missed opportunities such as a failed fourth-down attempt deep in their own territory that led to an Eagles field goal, a missed 58-yard field goal attempt, and an interception off a deflection in the red zone contributed to the loss.
On offense, quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a late-game 49-yard touchdown pass—the second consecutive week Kansas City has completed a pass of that length. Through two games this season, the Chiefs have four passing plays of at least 30 yards, tying them for second-most in the league.
The Chiefs now find themselves at an 0-2 start for the first time during Mahomes' tenure as starting quarterback. Despite this setback, there is precedent for teams rebounding from early losses; recent examples include playoff runs by last year's Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos after starting their seasons winless through two games.
Reflecting on the situation, Mahomes said: "I think we're coming together as a team, man. I mean, when you deal with adversity, it's about how you deal with it," Mahomes said. "Obviously, this isn't how we wanted to start, but how are we going to respond? So, I'm excited for the next few weeks to see who wants to be challenged, and how we can get back and really get after it."
Kansas City will look to regroup ahead of their upcoming prime-time matchup against the New York Giants.
