Sporting Kansas City lost 5-2 to Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday night at Lumen Field. The defeat leaves Sporting KC with a record of 6-15-6 and 24 points, while Seattle improves to 12-7-8 with 44 points.
Mason Toye scored for Sporting in the first half, marking his second goal of the season. Another goal came early in the second half when Tim Leibold’s cross led to an own goal by Seattle defender Cody Baker. Despite these efforts, Sporting could not overcome Seattle's attack, led by Danny Musovski who recorded a hat trick.
Interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin made one change from last week’s lineup against Orlando City SC, starting Daniel Salloi as captain in place of Shapi Suleymanov on the right side of midfield.
Seattle opened scoring in the 11th minute through Kalani Kossa-Rienzi after an initial shot was blocked by Zorhan Bassong but rebounded into the net. Sporting equalized in the 36th minute with a move that saw Bassong pass to Leibold, whose cross found Toye for a finish into the right corner.
Just before halftime, Reed Baker-Whiting assisted Musovski for Seattle’s second goal. Early in the second half, Musovski added another header from a Danny Leyva corner kick. Sporting narrowed the gap to 3-2 after Baker’s own goal but conceded again when Snyder Brunell scored from close range on the hour mark.
Musovski completed his hat trick from a penalty kick in the 75th minute following a foul drawn by Leyva inside the box. Late attempts by substitutes Suleymanov and Jacob Bartlett did not result in further goals for Kansas City.
The match drew an attendance of 30,184 at Lumen Field under mostly sunny skies and temperatures around 81 degrees.
Sporting Kansas City will return home next Saturday to play Colorado Rapids at Children’s Mercy Park with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.
