A photograph has the power to capture raw emotion and preserve fleeting moments. Over recent weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs have revisited nine of the best photos from their 2024-25 season, accompanied by commentary from Steve Sanders, the Chiefs' Director of Photography.
The series concludes with the top photo titled "By a Toe," taken during Week 1 against Baltimore. The image captures Ravens' tight end Isaiah Likely landing just out of bounds late in the Chiefs' victory over Baltimore. Mikayla Schlosser took this photo using a Canon EOS R3 camera with a focal length of 135 mm, exposure time of 1/3,200, and an aperture of f/2.2.
Steve Sanders shared his thoughts on why this photo was chosen as the top one for the year: "I've looked everywhere, and this seems to be the only frame like this that I've seen," he said. The moment was initially ruled a touchdown but was overturned upon review due to Likely's toe being out of bounds. This set a trend for last-second wins throughout their season.
Sanders explained how Mikayla Schlosser was prepared to capture this moment: "She was in the end zone near the back corner pylon," he said. The team anticipated key plays occurring in that area and positioned photographers accordingly.
Regarding planning for such shots, Sanders stated: "It's a lot of repetitive instructions... You want to be ready for these pivotal moments." He emphasized how practice and teaching moments prepare photographers for success.
Reflecting on this year's top ten photos, Sanders noted: "This was the hardest year that we've had to pick a top 10... We took more than half a million original photos this year." He hopes that they successfully told a compelling story from training camp through to the Super Bowl and that fans enjoyed it.
