The Kansas City Chiefs have launched Foolish Club Studios, a new venture dedicated to producing both scripted and non-scripted programming. This initiative recalls the creative influence of team founder Lamar Hunt in the realm of film production.

Hunt was actively involved in the creative aspects of his franchise's annual highlight films, which debuted at the end of each season. These films were once a major tool for generating interest in football before digital media took over in the 1990s.

Hunt's passion for film began as early as 1960 when he was part of the American Football League (AFL). He personally reviewed all sideline and end zone footage, providing feedback on what should be included or omitted. He sought "impact" shots and suggested using press box level and end zone cameras to offer viewers "different angled pictures."

Understanding that televised games already provided standard football action, Hunt advocated for isolated camera shots focusing on individual players like Jim Tyrer pass blocking or Len Dawson passing. He also wanted more field-level shots capturing player reactions on the bench and from behind huddles.

Even into the 1990s, Hunt requested that a camera be placed behind the huddle during open scrimmages to display how quarterbacks make decisions amid chaos. He emphasized avoiding footage of "players wandering around aimlessly," as such images lacked animation or enthusiasm.

Highlight film scripts bore Hunt's handwritten edits, reflecting his meticulous attention to detail. In one instance, he expressed dislike for Len Dawson's nickname "Lenny the Cool" and suggested an alternative. For the franchise's Silver Anniversary, he reflected on past highlight films, emphasizing accuracy by including both positive moments and challenges like empty seats and promotional gimmicks.

Although Hunt eventually stepped back from direct editing roles, he continued to oversee how each year's highlight film portrayed the team's story.
