A Kansas City woman has been indicted for allegedly preparing fraudulent tax returns, claiming over $300,000 in refunds for her clients. Tanisha Spencer, 34, was charged with 11 counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation and filing of false income tax returns. The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on May 20, accuses Spencer of helping at least six individuals file 11 fraudulent tax returns for the years 2021 through 2022. The alleged tax loss from these activities amounts to approximately $334,445.
The indictment claims that Spencer included illegitimate Sick and Family Leave Credits, Fuel Tax Credits, and inflated Federal Withholding amounts in the returns she prepared. These actions reportedly resulted in substantial refunds that her clients were not entitled to receive if their returns had been accurately filed.
It is important to note that the charges are accusations and not evidence of guilt. A federal trial jury will be responsible for determining Spencer's guilt or innocence based on the evidence presented.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul S. Becker is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.
