A Richmond, Missouri man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for receiving child pornography. Derek Shain, 36, received the sentence from U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark. The court also mandated that Shain undergo supervised release for life following his incarceration.

Shain pleaded guilty on January 16, 2025, to one count of receiving child pornography. He had a prior state conviction for possession of child pornography. Court documents revealed that Shain communicated with a 15-year-old minor female on a social media platform and requested an image of child pornography from her. A background check confirmed that Shain was a registered sex offender at the time of this offense. He also has previous state convictions for attempted child molestation in the first degree and age misrepresentation with intent to solicit a minor.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Maureen A. Brackett prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Sugar Creek, Missouri Police Department.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate and prosecute individuals who exploit children and to rescue victims.
