Jefferson City — Governor Mike Kehoe announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will engage in joint Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDAs) for public infrastructure in six counties following severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes that affected southwest and southeast Missouri on April 28-29.
Governor Kehoe stated, “Last week, intense severe storms once again brought destruction to areas of Missouri, further burdening families, businesses, and communities already dealing with the aftermath of previous damaging severe weather.” He added that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been working with local officials to document damage. "Our local partners and SEMA believe the emergency response costs and damage to roads, bridges, and other important public infrastructure warrant a formal review by FEMA and meet the levels required for a federal disaster declaration for Public Assistance."
The request for joint PDAs includes Barry, Greene, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, and Washington counties. Additional counties may be considered as more information is gathered from local officials.
Joint PDA teams will consist of representatives from FEMA, SEMA, and local emergency management officials. Starting Tuesday, May 13th, five teams will assess documented damage to determine eligibility for Public Assistance through FEMA. This assistance enables local governments and qualifying nonprofit agencies to seek federal aid for reimbursement of emergency response costs and recovery efforts like repairing damaged roads and bridges.
SEMA continues collaborating with local authorities, state agencies, volunteer groups, and faith-based organizations to identify needs and support affected families. Residents who have sustained damage are advised to contact their insurance providers promptly.
