A Rogersville man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. Lloyd Eugene Mathis, aged 37, received the sentence from U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool. Mathis, who had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, will serve his term without the possibility of parole.

The incident leading to Mathis's arrest occurred on February 21, 2024. U.S. Marshals, searching for Mathis due to outstanding warrants from Oklahoma, found him in a parking lot in Springfield. When the marshals approached, Mathis attempted to flee. During the struggle to apprehend him, officers discovered a loaded firearm in Mathis's waistband.

Court records revealed Mathis was uncooperative during the arrest, threatening officers and resisting physically. The gun found on Mathis was identified as an SCCY model CPX-2 9mm pistol, loaded with eight rounds of ammunition.

Under federal law, possession of a firearm by a felon is illegal. Mathis has a history of felony convictions spanning several offenses, including automobile theft, burglary, arson, and assault. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Wan prosecuted the case. The investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Greene County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. The initiative aims to combat violent crime and gun violence by strengthening community trust and setting focused enforcement priorities.
