With the May 7, 2025, federal REAL ID enforcement deadline approaching, Governor Mike Kehoe is urging Missourians to acquire a REAL ID-compliant identification card. Starting from this date, a REAL ID, passport, or another approved identification will be needed for air travel and access to federal buildings. "This is about keeping our state and country safe by preventing fraud and enhancing security," said Governor Kehoe. He acknowledged the Trump Administration and Secretary Noem for their role in ensuring American travelers' safety.
Residents across the United States will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card to board federally regulated domestic flights, access federal facilities, and enter nuclear power plants starting May 7, 2025. Presently, only 45 percent of Missouri Department of Revenue document holders possess a REAL ID.
The Missouri Department of Revenue offers resources to assist those without a REAL ID. Missouri law does not mandate obtaining a REAL ID, yet it will soon be necessary for specific official purposes. Noncompliant IDs remain valid for activities not subject to the REAL ID Act. REAL ID-compliant IDs feature a star in the upper right corner, contrary to the "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES" label on noncompliant IDs.
To obtain a REAL ID, Missouri residents must present valid documents verifying their identity, lawful status, and Social Security number, among others, at one of Missouri's contract license offices. The fees for REAL ID-compliant and noncompliant documents are identical.
The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005 to enhance security as recommended by the 9/11 Commission. Additional information about the REAL ID is available on the Department of Revenue, TSA, and DHS websites.
