Governor Mike Parson has appointed Melissa Price Smith as the next St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney. Smith is expected to assume her new role on January 3, 2025, following the anticipated resignation of Wesley Bell.
"We are proud to announce that Melissa Smith will serve as the next St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney," stated Governor Parson. He emphasized the importance of having an experienced prosecutor who upholds law and order, highlighting Smith's commitment to the rule of law and her career achievements in prosecuting criminals, including child abusers and violent offenders.
Governor Parson remarked, "Since I've been Governor, it's never been about politics, but doing right by the people of Missouri." He expressed confidence in Smith's ability to uphold these values and deliver justice for St. Louis County residents.
Smith has served in the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office since 2008 and currently holds the position of assistant prosecuting attorney and supervisor of the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse team. With 20 years of experience as a prosecutor, she has collaborated with law enforcement to address crime effectively.
Melissa Price Smith shared her gratitude upon learning about her appointment: "I am honored to accept the appointment as St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney." She underscored her dedication to fighting for justice for crime victims and working towards a safer community alongside law enforcement.
Smith's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Missouri–St. Louis and a Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law.
Per state statute, she will complete the current term ending on January 1, 2027.
