The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-28 on Monday, marking their third defeat of the season.
The Chiefs started strong, building a 14-point lead early in the game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led two touchdown drives on Kansas City's first three possessions, including a 9-play, 87-yard series ending with a pass to tight end Travis Kelce and another drive capped by Mahomes' own 9-yard touchdown run.
However, penalties proved costly for Kansas City. The team was flagged 13 times, their highest total since Week 11 of the 2018 season. One key penalty came after the Chiefs led by two touchdowns: a pass-interference call extended a Jaguars drive that ended in a touchdown and began a run of 21 unanswered points by Jacksonville. Another pass-interference call in the final moments erased an apparent game-winning interception for Kansas City and set up Jacksonville's decisive score.
"We obviously had 13 penalties to their four," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "[If] you have that many penalties [and] you give up field position, you can out-stat them to death, but it doesn't matter. It's the score that matters, and we've got to take care of business there."
Patrick Mahomes finished with 378 yards of offense—318 passing and one touchdown along with another rushing touchdown and 60 yards on the ground—making it one of his top performances this season. However, he also threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by Jacksonville.
Late in the fourth quarter, Mahomes orchestrated an 86-yard drive resulting in a go-ahead score for Kansas City. He completed all five pass attempts on that possession. But Jacksonville responded with a quick scoring drive covering 60 yards in just over one minute and scored with only 23 seconds left after converting multiple third downs.
The Chiefs will now prepare for their next matchup against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
