Sporting Kansas City experienced a 3-0 defeat against Minnesota United FC on Saturday at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. The loss marks Sporting’s fifth consecutive defeat and was their final away match of the 2025 season.
Minnesota United, currently second in the standings, took the lead in the 25th minute when Anthony Markanich scored with a header from Joaquin Pereyra’s free kick. Although Minnesota appeared to double their advantage soon after, an offside call kept the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Sporting Kansas City made three changes to their starting lineup for this match, moving to a 3-5-2 formation for the first time since June 22, 2024. Defender Robert Voloder replaced Khiry Shelton, while Nemanja Radoja and Jake Davis started in midfield instead of Stephen Afrifa and Daniel Salloi. Nine starters were aged 26 or younger, including Ian James, a 17-year-old academy product from Minnesota. Dejan Joveljic marked his 250th professional club appearance and wore the captain’s armband for Sporting for the first time.
Goalkeeper John Pulskamp made three saves during the match and remains the only Sporting player to have featured in all 35 competitive matches this season.
In the second half, Jake Davis prevented a goal by clearing Robin Lod’s shot off the line in the 52nd minute. However, Minnesota extended their lead in the 59th minute after capitalizing on a Kansas City turnover; Pulskamp saved Lod’s initial effort but Pereyra scored on the rebound. Four minutes later, Markanich added his second goal of the night with another header following a cross from Nectarios Triantis.
Sporting Kansas City created several chances late in the game but could not find a breakthrough. Nemanja Radoja hit the woodwork with a long-range shot and Joveljic narrowly missed with another attempt.
The match was attended by 19,784 fans under clear skies and an 80-degree temperature.
Sporting will finish their season at home against Houston Dynamo FC on October 18 during Fan Appreciation Night at Children’s Mercy Park. Tickets are available through SeatGeek and coverage will be provided on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.
Referee Natalie Simon officiated Saturday's contest alongside assistant referees Jeremy Kieso and Ian McKay. Kevin Stott served as VAR with John Krill as AVAR.
