The Kansas City Chiefs earned their first victory of the season with a 22-9 win over the New York Giants on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes extended a narrow halftime lead early in the third quarter, connecting with wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a 5-yard touchdown. The Giants narrowed the deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter, but running back Kareem Hunt’s 1-yard touchdown run on Kansas City’s next drive helped secure the outcome.

"[This was] a good win to get, [especially] when you hadn't had one," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "That was important to take a step forward. The second quarter was hard to watch there, but in the third and fourth quarter, I thought our guys really came together and played well."

Despite moving into Giants’ territory on their first three possessions, the Chiefs only managed six points early in the game. New York tied it up after Cam Skattebo scored on a 13-yard run, but Harrison Butker restored Kansas City’s lead with a field goal before halftime.

Kansas City’s defense limited New York’s offense throughout the game, holding them to just one conversion out of ten attempts on third down. Wide receivers Malik Nabers and Wan'Dale Robinson—who combined for significant production in their previous outing—were restricted to three catches for 39 yards.

A pivotal moment occurred late in the first half when cornerback Jaylen Watson intercepted Giants quarterback Russell Wilson in the end zone. This play led to what amounted to a ten-point swing for Kansas City. Defensive back Chris Roland-Wallace also contributed an interception.

"They've played great these last two weeks. They've played winning football," Mahomes said of his defense. "If they can continue to do that, and if we can clean some stuff up [offensively], we're going to win a lot of football games."

Thornton led Chiefs receivers with five catches for 71 yards, converting key third downs during scoring drives—including gains of 21 and 33 yards that set up Hunt's decisive touchdown run.

"He's showing some things," said Coach Reid about Thornton. "He's come in here and done nothing but work hard, so it's nice to see him getting an opportunity."

Coach Reid noted that no new injuries were reported after the game; safety Bryan Cook left briefly due to a neck issue but was later deemed fine.

The Chiefs will face the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday as they look to build momentum from this win.
