The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, 20-17, on Sunday afternoon, marking their second consecutive defeat to start the season.

Late in the game, with three minutes left and trailing by 10 points, quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a 49-yard touchdown. This reduced the deficit to three points. However, the Eagles recovered the following onside kick. Although the Chiefs had a chance to regain possession if they could stop Philadelphia’s offense, the Eagles managed a first down and used up the remaining time.

"I thought my guys played their tail off and played hard and aggressive football," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "They stuck together throughout the game, and that'll [pay off for] us down the road as we continue to grow."

The game was closely contested between last season’s Super Bowl participants. The Eagles scored first with a 13-yard run by Saquon Barkley. The Chiefs answered by scoring 10 straight points to take an early lead. Before halftime, Philadelphia tied it up with a 58-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter. Another field goal early in the second half gave Philadelphia a narrow lead after Kansas City failed on a fourth-down attempt deep in its own territory. Despite this field position, Kansas City's defense limited Philadelphia to only two yards and three points.

Kansas City's defense held Philadelphia to five conversions on fourteen third-down attempts and allowed just 216 total yards of offense. This effort kept Kansas City within reach as Mahomes led a long drive early in the fourth quarter that reached the Eagles’ six-yard line. However, an end zone pass from Mahomes was deflected and intercepted by Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba.

Philadelphia capitalized on that turnover when quarterback Jalen Hurts scored on a one-yard run. The Chiefs responded with another touchdown from Mahomes to Thornton but did not get another opportunity after that score.

Despite starting 0-2, Mahomes remained optimistic about how his team would handle adversity moving forward.

"I think we're coming together as a team, man. I mean, when you deal with adversity, it's about how you deal with it," Mahomes said. "Obviously, this isn't how we wanted to start, but how are we going to respond? So, I'm excited for the next few weeks to see who wants to be challenged, how we can get back and really get after it."

Defensive end Mike Danna (quad) and cornerback Kristian Fulton (ankle) both left Sunday’s game due to injuries.

The Chiefs will try to regroup next weekend in a prime-time matchup against the New York Giants.
