Sporting Kansas City II secured a draw against North Texas SC at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday night. The match ended 1-1 after regulation, with Sporting KC II taking two points by winning the shootout 4-3.
North Texas took the lead in the 82nd minute when Jaidyn Contreras scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Sam Sarver. Sporting KC II responded seven minutes later as Pierre Lurot headed in a corner from Johann Ortiz to tie the match.
Jack Kortkamp played a key role for Sporting KC II, making two saves during the shootout to secure the extra point for his team. Interim head coach Ike Opara started Kortkamp in goal and made several substitutions throughout the match to adjust tactics.
"SKC II looked to level the match with two shots from Ortiz. One was saved by Harms, and the other, from a tight angle, flashed wide of the goal. Ortiz was called on again in the 89th, this time as the corner kick taker from the left side of the pitch. The midfielder whipped in a ball that glanced off Lurot's head and past the keeper, evening the score at one."
The game saw multiple yellow cards issued for unsporting conduct and time wasting. Referee Kevin Lewis officiated alongside assistants Chana Forstall and Carson Thomas, with Gloria Martinez Resendiz serving as fourth official.
Sporting KC II will next play Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at Children's Mercy Victory Field on Friday, September 19. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on MLSNEXTPro.com; tickets are available through SeatGeek.com.
