Sporting Kansas City has secured the services of Mexican center back Alan Montes on loan from Club Necaxa for the remainder of the 2025 season. The club announced that the agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the year.
Montes, who is 24 years old and stands 6-foot-4, will fill an international roster spot for Sporting KC. His move is subject to completion of his entrance physical and receipt of both his International Transfer Certificate and P1 visa. The transaction takes place during Major League Soccer’s Secondary Transfer Window, which began July 24 and runs through August 21.
The defender has made a total of 119 club appearances in his career, scoring 10 goals. This includes four goals in 57 LIGA MX matches with both Necaxa and Monterrey. He joins Sporting KC after making 59 competitive appearances for Necaxa, where he contributed to a fifth-place finish in the Clausura spring season this year.
Born in Hermosillo, Mexico, Montes started his career at Cimarrones de Sonora before moving to Club Necaxa’s U-20 squad in 2020. He made his LIGA MX debut for Necaxa’s first team on October 24, 2020, against Queretaro. During the same season, he appeared in 26 matches for Necaxa U-20s and scored his first goal on April 9, 2021.
In the following season, Montes was loaned to Monterrey and its second team Raya2. There he earned four starts in LIGA MX play and scored twice over 19 games with Raya2 as part of their defense.
Returning to Necaxa in summer 2022, Montes played primarily with their U-20 side but also featured in senior competitions such as the Leagues Cup group stage against FC Dallas on July 25, 2023. His performances led to a regular starting role during the Apertura fall season that year; he played all league matches for Necaxa, scored against Tijuana, and recorded an assist versus Mazatlan.
In early 2024 during Clausura play, Montes helped guide Necaxa into the playoffs by playing regularly throughout their campaign—including a penalty shootout win over Queretaro before elimination by Pachuca. Last summer he started all three Leagues Cup games against MLS opponents Minnesota United FC, Seattle Sounders FC and San Jose Earthquakes.
Most recently during this year’s Apertura campaign with Necaxa he added five more appearances—scoring his latest goal on February 21 in a win over Mazatlan—before making this move abroad for the first time.
Montes is also known as the younger brother of Cesar Montes—a former Monterrey center back who currently plays for Lokomotiv Moscow and has represented Mexico at World Cups.
