Melissa Runge, a Special Education teacher at Sunflower Elementary School in Gardner, Kansas, has been recognized as the Blue KC Sporting Samaritan for July. Runge's career path was influenced by her work with adults with disabilities and her desire to advocate for students facing similar challenges.

“I learned how those with disabilities didn’t have an advocate throughout school, and I wanted to become the advocate they never had,” said Runge. Her journey into special education began unexpectedly when she was recommended for a position teaching gifted education.

Runge extends her teaching services to four additional elementary schools within the district. “I have incredible co-workers and amazing families,” she said. “In addition to Sunflower Elementary, the four new schools have opened their doors to me and accepted me as one of their own.”

Her mother has been a significant influence on her teaching philosophy. “Every child can learn, but not on the same day or in the same way,” is advice from her mother that guides Runge’s approach.

“For me, the first lesson I always teach my students is to be fearless,” said Runge. She emphasizes kindness and humor in her classroom environment. “I do my best to let my room be a non-judgmental area,” she added.

Runge's commitment extends beyond academics; she attends extracurricular activities of her students, showing them care beyond the classroom walls. “I tell them the second they walk into my room as my student that they become one of my babies,” said Runge.

Jason Jones, one of Runge’s nominators, highlighted her dedication: “Melissa prioritizes relationships with her students and families.” Jenny Housley from Blue KC praised Melissa's impact: “Her confidence, work ethic and commitment to her community exemplify how uniquely fortunate we are to have her in our local education system.”

The Blue KC Sporting Samaritan program honors individuals making significant impacts in Kansas City through partnerships between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) and Sporting KC.
