A Kansas City man has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison for methamphetamine trafficking and firearm possession. Travis N. Black, 45, received a 96-month sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Stephen R. Bough for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and knowingly being a felon in possession of a firearm. An additional 24 months were added for violating conditions of federal supervision related to a prior conviction for firearm possession, bringing the total sentence to 120 months without parole. Following his incarceration, Black will serve three years of supervised release.

Black pleaded guilty on February 13, 2025, after waiving indictment on charges of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The incident leading to Black's arrest occurred on November 7, 2023, when officers from the Kansas City Police Department identified him as the driver of a stolen Ford Expedition. The vehicle had been reported stolen on October 13, 2023. After attempting to evade police by crashing into trees near North Cypress Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, Black fled the scene with a female passenger.

Law enforcement later apprehended Black and the female at another location where they attempted to leave via an Uber ride. During an inventory search of the wrecked vehicle, officers found approximately 70 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded Taurus revolver on the driver's seat. DNA analysis linked Black to the firearm.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Alford is prosecuting this case following investigations by the Kansas City Police Department.

This prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime through resources from various Department of Justice programs.
