Today, Governor Mike Kehoe announced a special session at the Missouri State Capitol. The session aims to address disaster relief for families affected by recent severe storms, promote economic development through tax incentives, and make essential budget appropriations.
The General Assembly is set to meet in Jefferson City on June 2, 2025, to discuss these priorities. Governor Kehoe emphasized the importance of this session: “We are proud of all that the General Assembly accomplished during the regular legislative session, but there is still work left to be done. We call on legislators to use this special session as a rare opportunity to support our vulnerable neighbors in their time of need, drive economic development, and make transformative investments in our state. This work is too important to leave unfinished."
Missouri has faced several severe storm systems recently, causing loss of life and damage to homes and infrastructure. The proposed legislation includes an income tax deduction for insurance policy deductibles due to weather-related damages, capped at $5,000 per household per disaster annually. It also seeks to enhance the Missouri Housing Trust Fund's utility by expanding eligibility and removing administrative burdens.
Governor Kehoe also called for legislation under the Show Me Sports Investment Act aimed at retaining major sports teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in Missouri. These teams significantly contribute economically through tourism and job creation.
Additional proposals include extending tax credits for amateur sporting events and appropriating funds for various projects such as the Radioisotope Science Center at the University of Missouri Research Reactor.
