A Kansas City man faces charges for allegedly possessing a firearm unlawfully. Marcus J. Porras, 31, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Mo. The indictment, handed down today, replaces an earlier federal complaint from April 14, 2025.
As outlined in the affidavit supporting the initial complaint, officers from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department responded on April 13, 2025, to a call at Westport Road and Broadway Boulevard. Security officers had detained Porras for involvement in a fight.
A security officer reported being alerted by patrons about an altercation inside the Westport Entertainment District. Upon observing multiple women and two men engaged in a physical fight, the security officer noted that the women dispersed, leaving the two men continuing to fight. One of the men pointed at Porras, indicating he possessed a firearm.
Subsequently, Porras was taken into custody. The security officer recovered a Glock 43, 9mm pistol from the scene, loaded with one live round in the chamber. Additionally, a magazine with six live rounds was found.
Federal law prohibits individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition. Porras's criminal record includes felonies for robbery, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting arrest, detention, or stop.
It is important to note that the charges in the indictment are accusations, not evidence of guilt. The responsibility to determine guilt or innocence rests with a federal trial jury, where evidence supporting the charges will be presented.
The case is under prosecution by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica L. Jennings and was investigated by the Kansas City, Mo. Police Department.
This case is also tied to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a national initiative to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Department, on May 26, 2021, launched a violent crime reduction strategy to strengthen PSN with principles such as fostering trust in communities, supporting violence-prevention community-based organizations, and setting enforcement priorities.
