Following the severe storms that affected Missouri on March 14, 2025, Governor Mike Kehoe and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) have acted promptly to assist school districts impacted by the disaster. Their focus is on enabling students to return safely to their classrooms at the earliest opportunity.

Preliminary evaluations indicate that nearly two dozen school districts were affected by the storm, with numerous buildings suffering damage. The challenges faced include significant power outages, major structural damage, and both temporary and potential long-term displacement of students and educators.

Governor Kehoe expressed his concern over the situation: “While I am disheartened to see the damage that a number of Missouri schools faced from Friday night’s storm, I am incredibly grateful that these storms did not hit while school was in session.” He emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s safe return to school to avoid any academic setbacks.

In response, DESE is collaborating closely with affected school districts to find alternative education sites and secure transportation for students. The department also aims to ensure that these districts are not financially penalized under the state education foundation formula for days they cannot operate.

Commissioner Karla Eslinger stated: “We began working on this issue early Saturday morning and have been in close contact with Governor Kehoe since the very beginning.” She added that their top priority is ensuring safe learning environments for students and educators. "I am speaking directly to impacted school leaders to ensure we’re making rapid progress to help schools recover," she noted, expressing gratitude for Governor Kehoe's leadership during these challenging times.

School districts are advised to reach out to their DESE Area Supervisor of Instruction if they need assistance or wish to report specific needs.
