Today, Governor Mike Kehoe announced that U.S. and Missouri flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of Captain Vernon Collett of the Johnson County Fire Protection District. This tribute will occur on March 14, 2025, at government buildings in Johnson County, the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City, and firehouses throughout the state.

Governor Kehoe expressed his respect for Captain Collett's dedication to public service: “Vernon Collett’s full-time job was with the Johnson County Road and Bridge Department, but he also had a calling to serve his community as a volunteer firefighter with the Johnson County Fire Protection District.” He added that Captain Collett served for over 29 years and was involved in numerous emergency responses. “He died fulfilling the responsibility he had taken on in order to protect others. We will remember Captain Collett as a model public servant who selflessly supported his community.”

Captain Collett passed away on March 8 after collapsing from a medical emergency while responding to a controlled burn that had become unmanageable.

Flags will remain at half-staff on the day of Captain Collett's funeral.
