Governor Mike Kehoe of Missouri has signed Executive Order 25-18, mandating the elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives across all state agencies. The order requires these agencies to align with the constitutional principle of equal protection under the law by removing DEI considerations from their operations.
The executive order prohibits the use of state funds for DEI purposes and prevents its consideration in hiring decisions within state agencies. Governor Kehoe emphasized that "Missourians deserve a government that treats all individuals equally, without preferential treatment or discrimination based on immutable characteristics." He further stated that the order is intended to ensure fairness and merit-based decision-making within state operations.
Key directives outlined in the order include upholding equal protection under the law, eliminating public funds for DEI-related activities, prohibiting DEI considerations in hiring processes, and conducting compliance reviews within 90 days. This directive will require agencies to evaluate existing contracts, programs, and policies to ensure adherence.
The order does not affect federal or state statutory requirements related to citizens' rights and freedoms. State agencies are still obligated to enforce laws prohibiting discrimination while maintaining fairness for all residents.
