Governor Mike Kehoe has directed that both U.S. and Missouri flags be flown at half-staff at all government buildings in Macon County on Sunday, February 16, 2025. This decision honors U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Shelbe Faye Butner, who lost her life during a training exercise at Fort Stewart United States Army post in Georgia on January 30, 2025.
“Staff Sergeant Shelbe Faye Butner was dedicated to serving our country with honor, courage, and unwavering commitment,” said Governor Mike Kehoe. “Staff Sergeant Butner considered the welfare of others a personal responsibility and was guided by her love of country to serve our nation. Her sacrifice reminds us of the bravery and dedication of the men and women who put themselves in harm's way to protect our freedoms. Claudia and I join Shelbe's family and friends in honoring her service and mourning her loss.”
A native of Macon High School’s class of 2015, Staff Sergeant Butner joined the U.S. Army on June 1, 2015. She specialized as an Army Motor Transport Operator under Military Occupational Specialty Code 88M and completed several advanced training programs such as the Army Basic Leader Course, Air Assault School, and Drill Sergeant School. She served with distinction in the 6th Squadron - 8th Cavalry Regiment where she attained the rank of Staff Sergeant on August 1, 2022.
During her nine-year military career which included a deployment to Kuwait, Staff Sergeant Butner received multiple accolades like the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, among others.
Flags will be lowered on the day of Staff Sergeant Butner's interment services.
