Governor Mike Parson has declared December as Christmas Tree Month in Missouri. The announcement was made during a ceremony where the winners of the Missouri Christmas Tree Association’s annual wreath and tree contests were recognized.
"Live Christmas trees are a staple in homes throughout Missouri during the holiday season," stated Governor Parson. "The First Lady and I love celebrating these classic holiday symbols grown by Missouri farmers. We are proud to proclaim December as Christmas Tree Month as we continue to recognize our farmers and ranchers for their contributions to our state. Agriculture is Missouri's top economic driver, and Christmas tree farms are a perfect example of how Missouri farmers and ranchers provide quality products to consumers year-round."
Lloyd’s Family Farm in Ashland won the tree contest, providing a 10-foot scotch pine tree for display at the Missouri Capitol. The farm, operated by sixth-generation farmers Zach and Erin Diederich, has been part of the community since 1877. It offers various seasonal activities including you-pick strawberries, blackberries, pumpkins, and you-cut Christmas trees.
Pea Ridge Forest in Hermann won this year's wreath contest. Established by LeRoy & Mary Rood in 1972, it is now run by their sons Mike & Scott Rood. The farm offers choose-and-cut Christmas trees along with other activities such as hayrides and complimentary hot chocolate.
"The agritourism industry is vital to our state’s agriculture economy," said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. "Participating in this fun event that showcases a unique segment of the industry is always a highlight for my team and me. Agriculture comes in many shapes and sizes in Missouri, and Christmas tree farmers play a significant role in diversifying our agriculture operations."
