Two Kansas City men received federal sentences for their involvement in stealing over 100 firearms from vehicles in the Westport entertainment district and other areas. The stolen weapons were sold via social media platforms.

Rayquan Duane Pettaway, 25, was sentenced to 11 years and eight months without parole by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays. His sentence will run consecutively with sentences from two unrelated cases in Cass County, Missouri, and Harris County, Texas. Roy Rushing, 27, received a nine-year and two-month sentence without parole, also to be served consecutively with sentences from cases in Jackson County and Cass County. Both were ordered to pay $1,500 in restitution alongside other defendants.

Pettaway pleaded guilty on October 26, 2023, to conspiracy charges related to receiving and selling stolen firearms and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He admitted his role in breaking into vehicles to steal firearms which were then sold illegally through social media.

The crimes occurred between June 18 and November 19, 2021. Pettaway was found with a Glock 9mm handgun and a Glock .40-caliber handgun upon his arrest on July 11, 2021. Officers observed suspicious behavior leading to Pettaway's arrest after he attempted to flee the scene.

Federal law prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms or ammunition. Pettaway has previous felony convictions for assault and unlawful weapon use.

Rushing pleaded guilty on July 26, 2023, for possessing stolen firearms including a Radical Firearms AR-type rifle and two Glock handguns reported as stolen on November 4, 2021. Seven firearms were discovered during a search of his residence by federal agents.

Other individuals involved include Drevion Hooker who was sentenced to seven years and one month without parole on September 4, 2024; Bobby Lamb who received an eleven-year sentence without parole on July 27, 2024; and Treyon Bloodsoe who is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty on October 26, 2023.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stefan C. Hughes is prosecuting the case following investigations by the Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
