U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore presented the annual Crystal Kipper & Ali Kemp Memorial Award to Rasta, a courtroom therapy dog, and his handler, Jennifer Vernon, in Kansas City. The award, given during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, recognizes the valuable contribution of individuals or organizations in preventing and responding to the exploitation of children.

“Every dog lover has had the experience of being comforted by their devoted canine friend,” said Moore, highlighting Rasta's role in providing a calming influence for traumatized children during legal proceedings. By reducing anxiety for vulnerable victims, Rasta contributes to the pursuit of justice.

Rasta, a trained therapy dog, has a history of offering comfort to those in need, including children at Synergy Services who have experienced trauma. Jennifer Vernon, Rasta's handler, shared that Rasta has been involved in various trials, depositions, and hearings, providing support to survivors before and after giving testimony.

The award ceremony was attended by Anna Kipper Rea, the mother of Crystal Kipper, and representatives from the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation. The theme for the 2024 Crime Victims’ Rights Week focuses on creating safe spaces for victims to share their experiences and find support and hope.

Through Rasta's work as a courtroom therapy dog, he continues to make a significant impact on the lives of children and witnesses involved in legal proceedings, providing them with the comfort and support they need during challenging times.
