The history of St. Benedict Mission in Burlington Junction, dating back to 1880, has been one of growth and change over the decades. The mission, initially established as a small Mass station by Benedictine monks, has seen various developments in its church buildings and community engagement. As stated in a historical account found at Conception Abbey, there has been some dispute over the church's original dedication, with differing opinions on whether it was dedicated to St. Placid or St. Benedict.

Before having their own church building, the Catholic families in the area would gather for Mass at someone's home when a traveling monk passed through. The mission's journey included the construction of multiple church buildings, with the current church accommodating 300 persons and being dedicated in 1964 with the support of the Catholic Church Extension Society.

Over the years, the mission faced challenges in maintaining its membership and financial stability. A significant decline in the number of active members, registered households, and Sunday Mass attendance was observed from 1995 to 2022. The mission's ability to support a priest independently became increasingly difficult, leading to a reliance on financial assistance from other parishes.

In response to the ongoing decline in both membership and financial support, the Diocesan Bishop issued a Decree amalgamating St. Benedict Mission with St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Tarkio. The decision, made after careful consideration of the law and facts, aims to address the challenges faced by the mission and enhance the spiritual and community services offered to parishioners.

The Diocesan Bishop highlighted the necessity of uniting the two parishes due to the declining numbers and financial constraints faced by St. Benedict Mission. By combining efforts and resources with St. Paul the Apostle Parish, located just 18 miles away, the new parish aims to strengthen its evangelizing opportunities and better serve the faithful in the region.

Effective April 14, 2024, the amalgamation will see St. Paul the Apostle Parish encompassing the territory of the former St. Benedict Mission. The Diocese of Kansas City – Saint Joseph will ensure the proper preservation of all parish and sacramental records from St. Benedict Mission.

This decision, made with the well-being of the faith community in mind, reflects the commitment to adapt to changing circumstances and continue serving the spiritual needs of parishioners in the region.
