The Kansas City Chiefs secured a win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, delivering a strong performance in all three phases of the game.
Kansas City scored 30 points and gained 355 yards of offense, marking the third consecutive week the team has scored at least 28 points. Over this three-game stretch, the Chiefs have averaged 31.7 points and 404.3 yards per game. The team’s 95 total points during this period are their highest in a three-game span since late in the 2021 season. The Chiefs’ efficiency in the red zone has been a key factor, converting 12 out of 17 opportunities into touchdowns since Week 3.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 22 of 30 passes for 257 yards and four total touchdowns, achieving a passer rating of 132.2. He set an NFL record by becoming the fastest player to reach 300 career touchdown passes, accomplishing this feat in just 139 games and surpassing Aaron Rodgers' previous mark of 147 games.
The Chiefs continued their success on fourth down, converting two out of three attempts against Detroit. For the season, Kansas City has converted on fourth down 11 times out of 13 attempts, which is currently the best rate among teams with double-digit tries.
Mahomes distributed passes to eight different receivers during the game. Four players—Travis Kelce (321 yards), Hollywood Brown (302), Tyquan Thornton (272), and JuJu Smith-Schuster (225)—have each surpassed 220 receiving yards this season. Xavier Worthy added a touchdown catch and now averages over 11 yards per touch since returning from injury.
Hollywood Brown caught four passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns, recording his first multi-touchdown game since 2021. Through six games, he leads the team in receptions with 30 and is tied for most touchdown catches with three.
Offensive tackle Jaylon Moore started in place of Josh Simmons and allowed only three pressures on 40 pass-blocking snaps while facing All-Pro Aidan Hutchinson.
Defensively, Kansas City limited Detroit’s league-leading offense—which had averaged nearly 35 points per game—to just 17 points. This was Detroit’s lowest output since Week 1. It also marked the second time this season that Kansas City held an opponent who entered as the top-scoring offense to under 20 points; they previously did so against Baltimore in Week 4. Since the start of the 2023 season, Kansas City’s defense has allowed an average of just 18.6 points per game over a span of forty games.
Charles Omenihu recorded his second sack of the season at a crucial moment in the fourth quarter, helping to secure possession for Kansas City late in the game.
According to NBC Sports, “the Chiefs became the first team since 1972 with zero turnovers, zero accepted penalties and no more than one punt in a game on Sunday.”
Kansas City will look to build on this disciplined performance next week when they face divisional rival Las Vegas Raiders.
