The Kansas City Chiefs secured a 30-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, in a matchup between two of the NFL's top teams.
Kansas City trailed by four points late in the first half before quarterback Patrick Mahomes scored on a 1-yard run, giving the Chiefs a lead they held for the rest of the game. Detroit narrowed the gap to three points early in the fourth quarter, but Kansas City responded with scores each time.
"[On both sides of the ball], I thought the coordinators had great game plans," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "It was one of those good nights."
Mahomes completed 22 of 30 passes for 257 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns. He led Kansas City to scores on five of its seven possessions. His first touchdown pass, a 6-yard throw to Xavier Worthy on fourth down, came after Detroit's opening drive consumed over nine minutes but resulted only in a field goal.
Despite missing starting left tackle Josh Simmons due to personal reasons, Kansas City's offense continued to move effectively. Jaylon Moore filled in at left tackle and helped limit Detroit's pass rush. "I thought Jaylon did a nice job," Reid said. "For him to step in was [big], and I thought he did a nice job. It's a tribute to [Offensive Line Coach] Andy [Heck] for rolling that group during the week and [having him ready]."
Detroit responded with a touchdown from Jared Goff to Jameson Williams but failed to maintain momentum as both teams traded unsuccessful fourth-down attempts. Mahomes then engineered an eight-play, 55-yard drive capped by his own rushing touchdown before halftime.
After halftime, Mahomes led another scoring drive ending with a short pass to Hollywood Brown for a 9-yard touchdown. "That was huge," Mahomes said. "I think we learned from last week, and we emphasized in the locker room that we needed to go back out there and score. We were able to do that."
Detroit closed within three points early in the fourth quarter, but Mahomes again answered with another touchdown pass to Brown.
Kansas City's defense limited Detroit—who entered averaging nearly 35 points per game—to just 17 points. After allowing an early second-quarter touchdown, Kansas City held Detroit scoreless on five of their final six drives. Defensive lineman Charles Omenihu recorded a key sack midway through the fourth quarter.
"I thought they really bowed up in the second half," Reid said.
The Chiefs finished without turnovers or accepted penalties and punted only once—a feat not seen since 1972 according to NBC Sports.
Reid reported no injuries following the game. The Chiefs now stand at 3-3 and will face the Las Vegas Raiders next weekend.
