On September 24, 2025, the Kansas City Chiefs named Drew Hudgins of Staley High School in Missouri and Drew Steffen of Eudora High School in Kansas as their Week 4 High School Coaches of the Week. The award recognizes head coaches in the Kansas City area for their achievements on the field and leadership off it.
Both coaches will receive a $500 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation, a Chiefs bucket hat, a certificate of recognition, and a custom game ball. They also become eligible for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which is decided by members of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association at season's end.
The Staley Falcons secured their first conference win by defeating previously unbeaten Blue Springs Wildcats 21-14. Staley’s defense recorded three interceptions in the first half, one resulting in a touchdown. The team led 21-7 at halftime and allowed only one more score in the fourth quarter.
"This award is indicative of our players and the rest of the coaching staff's hard work throughout the week and their effort on Friday," Hudgins said. "It is a team award, and I am proud of our team."
Hudgins is serving his second year as head coach at Staley after leading Blue Valley North in 2023. His previous experience includes twelve years at Mill Valley, where he coached defenses to seven Class 5A state championships. He played defensive end at Highland Community College before transferring to Colorado.
Eudora improved its conference record to 2-0 after beating Spring Hill 24-14. The Cardinals limited Spring Hill to just 64 passing yards and maintained control after leading 10-0 at halftime.
"This is one of those awards that shows the hard work our team and coaches put in each week," Steffen said. "Football is the best team sport, and it takes everyone working together to beat good football teams. Our guys played really well and believed in the plan our coordinators came up with. It is an honor, and we hope to continue to build off this momentum with a big game this week against 3-0 Ottawa."
Steffen has been Eudora’s head coach for four years, reaching playoffs every season since taking over from his role as defensive coordinator in 2020. He previously coached at Mission Valley as defensive coordinator for four seasons before joining Shawnee Mission East as special teams coordinator for five years.
The High School Coach of the Week program has been running for twenty-nine years through collaboration between the Kansas City Chiefs and National Football League. The initiative aims not only to recognize coaching success but also highlight individuals who support student-athletes' development beyond football.
Each week during football season, PrepsKC works with the Chiefs to select Coaches of the Week from both Missouri and Kansas schools. PrepsKC provides high school sports coverage through its website www.prepskc.com.
