Sporting Kansas City secured a 4-2 comeback victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park, ending a winless streak that dated back to July 4. The team now has 27 points from 28 matches this season.
Dejan Joveljic led Sporting with two goals, bringing his season total to 16, which ties him for third in the MLS Golden Boot race and is also tied for third most in a single season in club history. Joveljic's scoring record since joining Kansas City is second only to Lionel Messi among MLS players since the start of 2024.
Daniel Salloi scored Sporting’s equalizer and reached his seventh goal of the year during his 250th MLS appearance. His goal moved him into a tie for second place on Sporting’s all-time scoring list with Dom Dwyer and Johnny Russell. Mason Toye came off the bench to net the game-winning goal, marking his third of the year and extending his run of contributions to three consecutive matches.
Joveljic opened the scoring early after connecting with Khiry Shelton’s cross. Colorado responded with Rafael Navarro converting after a missed penalty opportunity and Keegan Rosenberry adding another before halftime. Sporting trailed 2-1 at intermission but rallied with three second-half goals from Salloi, Toye, and Joveljic.
Interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin made changes to the lineup, including starting Ian James at center back for only his second career start and bringing Shapi Suleymanov into attack. Jansen Miller recorded his first MLS assist on Salloi’s tying goal.
The match drew an attendance of 16,262 fans under cloudy skies at Children’s Mercy Park.
"Dejan finds the cross from Khiry and heads it HOME," stated Sporting Kansas City via their official social media account.
"DANIEL SALLOI GETS THE EQUALIZER," according to another post by Sporting Kansas City.
"MASON AIN'T TOYE-ING AROUND," said Sporting Kansas City following Toye's go-ahead goal.
"DEJAN MAKES IT FOURRRR," reported Sporting Kansas City after Joveljic sealed the result late in the match.
Sporting will return home next Sunday, Sept. 7, hosting Austin FC at 6 p.m. CT in a Western Conference matchup broadcast live on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV, with tickets available through SeatGeek.
With this result, Sporting achieved its first regular season sweep of Colorado across multiple games since 1997.
