The Kansas City Chiefs concluded their preseason on Friday with a narrow loss to the Chicago Bears, who scored a last-second touchdown. Despite the defeat, several positive takeaways emerged for the Chiefs as they prepare for the regular season.
Kansas City's starting lineup made an early impact, building a 17-point lead during three drives led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Making his first preseason appearance since Week 1, Mahomes completed 8 of 13 passes for 143 yards and one touchdown over 21 snaps.
Mahomes led a 69-yard drive that ended with running back Isiah Pacheco scoring from two yards out. The team added a field goal on its next possession before Mahomes finished his night with a four-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Rashee Rice in the third series.
Throughout his time on the field, Mahomes connected with six different receivers. His performance included a notable 58-yard completion to Tyquan Thornton during Kansas City's second drive and five completions of at least ten yards.
"[If] defenses are going to play us the way they have [over the] last few years, we [have] to be able to win on the outside," Mahomes said. "In order to be the best version of ourselves, we have to be able to prove game-by-game that we can hit these deep passes, and if we do that, is opens up the rest of the offense and everybody can get going."
While Kansas City's offense was productive early, its first-team defense limited Chicago's starters to just 22 total yards and no points over two possessions. Defensive linemen Chris Jones and Charles Omenihu combined for a sack against Bears quarterback Caleb Williams late in Chicago's second series.
As reserves entered later in the game, Chicago managed to outscore Kansas City by 19 points. The Bears took their first lead with only three seconds left in regulation.
Head Coach Andy Reid commented on evaluating players fighting for roster spots: "We got to play everybody – that was a positive," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "Some of these guys have been busting their tail throughout camp, and our [third team] and [fourth team] had a chance to go up against their [second team], and [that was] a great experience for them."
Coach Reid also reported no injuries following Friday's contest.
The Chiefs now face roster decisions as they must reduce their squad to 53 players by Tuesday ahead of their regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 5.
