Jackson County Parks + Rec has secured over $525,000 in grants aimed at enhancing and maintaining its historic sites. The funding will benefit the Fort Osage National Historic Landmark and Missouri Town Living History Museum, each receiving $200,000 through the Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project and UMKC’s Kansas City Monuments Coalition.
The Mellon Foundation has granted the University of Missouri-Kansas City $4 million to establish the Kansas City Monuments Coalition. This initiative aims to support 16 preservation and commemorative organizations across Kansas City, ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy these historic sites for years to come.
In collaboration with Tom Hand, author and creator of Americana Corner, Parks + Rec has obtained the Americana Corner Grant. This grant provides $25,000 annually for five years to support these historic locations. According to their website, "Americana Corner is dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of America’s founding and the principles that shaped our nation. By exploring the struggles, triumphs, and the legacy of our founding era, we foster a deeper appreciation of our country’s history and its lasting impact on the world."
Additionally, a $3,000 educational grant from Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance will fund traveling exhibits. The Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance focuses on projects that have a positive impact along the expedition's pathways.
