Today, Governor Mike Kehoe has mandated that U.S. and Missouri flags be flown at half-staff in honor of William "Bill" Nix, a firefighter with the Thomasville Volunteer Fire Department. This directive applies to government buildings in Oregon County, the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City, and firehouses throughout the state on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from sunrise to sunset.

Governor Kehoe remarked on Nix's dedication: “In his retirement, Bill Nix answered a calling to serve Oregon County by becoming a volunteer firefighter.” He highlighted Nix's background as a retired trucker who managed the department’s large tanker and maintained other vehicles efficiently. In recognition of his efforts, Nix received the 2022 Thomasville Volunteer Firefighter of the Year award. Kehoe added, “Firefighter Nix's commitment to helping others and his devotion to supporting his community serve as inspiration to all of us to give back." He extended condolences from himself and his wife Claudia to the Nix family and colleagues.

The incident leading to this tribute occurred on January 16 when Firefighter Nix was involved in an accident while responding to a structure fire. The fire engine he was traveling in overturned on U.S. Highway 160 near Thomasville, resulting in his death.

Flags will remain at half-staff during Nix’s memorial services. Details regarding the Governor’s proclamation are available online.
