In recent years, the communities of Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs in eastern Jackson County have experienced significant growth. These areas are projected to represent the greatest future population growth within the diocese.

Last February, Bishop Johnston initiated a strategic study to ensure that parishes and the diocese effectively plan to serve the needs of the local community. The process involved leadership from several parishes and schools: Our Lady of the Presentation Parish and School, Holy Spirit Parish, St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, St. John LaLande Parish and School, St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, and St. Michael the Archangel High School. These entities collaborated with diocesan leadership and a consulting firm to create a strategic plan.

Over six months, committees reviewed demographic projections, forecasts, and parish data trends to develop a pastoral strategy aimed at future vitality while considering resource availability within the diocese.

Bishop Johnston announced the final plan on January 25-26, 2025, to the five parishes involved in this planning process.

The recommendations in the plan provide an opportunity for all parishes and schools in Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs to collaborate in new ways and embrace growth opportunities. The final plan approved by Bishop James V. Johnston Jr., titled "Pastoral and School Plan for Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs," is available as a PDF document.
