The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph has released its annual financial report, presenting a detailed overview of the diocese's fiscal health and stewardship practices. Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr., alongside Diocesan Finance Officer Angela Laville, communicated the findings to the community.

"Our diocese is in a strong financial position," stated Bishop Johnston, highlighting the success of recent fundraising initiatives like the Annual Catholic Appeal and support for seminarian education and Bright Futures Schools. He emphasized that "your participation this year at some level is itself an expression of faith."

Reflecting on the past year, Bishop Johnston noted a positive trajectory in parish communities post-pandemic, with increased vitality in worship and charitable service. The bishop also mentioned growth in seminary interest, stating that there are currently 19 seminarians from the diocese.

The closure of several rural mission parishes was addressed as part of strategic resource management. "While painful," these closures aim to better allocate clergy and facilities across growing communities focused on discipleship.

In her letter accompanying the report, Angela Laville stressed transparency and accountability as critical to effective resource use within the diocese. The Diocesan Chancery Operation (DCO) ended with a surplus of $1 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024.

Key financial figures from various diocesan funds were disclosed:

- The DCO's total assets increased to $56.4 million.

- The Diocesan Deposit and Loan Fund (DLF) saw asset growth to $87.7 million.

- The Diocesan Insurance Operation (DIO) reported net assets at $10.3 million despite experiencing its first loss in ten years.

The report highlighted ongoing efforts towards cost-effective insurance coverage for lay employees and clergy through self-insurance programs established by the diocese since 1975.

Bishop Johnston expressed gratitude for continued community support: "Thank you for your generosity in giving back to God from the various blessings God has given you; for indeed, 'the Love of Christ urges us on!'"

Angela Laville invited further inquiries about the report via phone or email and directed interested parties to access complete audits online.
