Governor Mike Parson has formally requested a major disaster declaration from President Joe Biden to secure federal assistance for 14 counties in Missouri. This request follows severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that took place from November 3 to November 9, 2024, causing significant damage to public infrastructure.

“For the past week, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been working in close coordination with our federal and local partners to document damage in the impacted areas,” Governor Parson stated. “We are confident that federal assistance will be forthcoming and appreciate all the work that’s already been done by SEMA, local responders, and partner agencies to help these communities recover.”

Joint assessments by FEMA, SEMA, and local emergency managers estimate nearly $45 million in infrastructure damage and emergency response costs eligible for federal aid.

The governor's request includes Public Assistance for Carter, Crawford, Dent, Douglas, Howell, Oregon, Ozark, Phelps, Pulaski, Reynolds, Shannon, Texas, Washington, and Wright counties. If approved by the President's administration, this would enable local governments and qualifying nonprofit organizations to seek reimbursement for emergency response efforts as well as repair of damaged roads and bridges.

On November 5th of this year Governor Parson issued Executive Order 24-14 declaring a state of emergency which activated Missouri's State Emergency Operations Plan. This action allowed state agencies direct coordination with local jurisdictions for necessary support.

SEMA continues its collaboration with various stakeholders including local officials and volunteer groups to address needs of affected families. Residents with unmet needs can reach out through United Way at 2-1-1 or contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.
