On October 20, the Catholic Church will observe World Mission Sunday, a day dedicated to supporting the Missions of the Church through a worldwide Eucharistic celebration. This year's theme is inspired by Pope Francis' invitation from the Gospel: “Go and invite everyone to the banquet (cf. Mt 22:9).”

The event calls on Catholics to share God's love globally, echoing a mission that has been central to their faith for over a century. The Catholic community in the United States, once supported by international generosity, now contributes to more than 1,150 mission territories across Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific Islands, and the Middle East.

Funds collected on World Mission Sunday aid seminarians, future religious sisters, catechists, Catholic schools providing essential education, and healthcare centers offering vital care. These efforts are seen as embodying Christ's love.

Bishop James V. Johnston Jr., from the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, encourages participation in this mission through contributions and prayers. He emphasizes that these actions support evangelization efforts and invite others to experience joy and hope in Christ.

Bishop Johnston urges Catholics to respond generously: "Let us unite in prayer for the success of the Church’s missionary activities and for missionaries who dedicate their lives to spreading the Gospel." He describes such generosity as a testament to faith's core values of love and compassion.

He concludes with an appeal for deeper commitment: "May this World Mission Sunday deepen our commitment to the Church’s universal mission." Donations can be made at onefamilyinmission.org.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend James V. Johnston Jr., Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph
