The importance of public health in promoting well-being and addressing barriers to healthy living was highlighted by Marvia Jones, Ph.D., Director of Health at the Kansas City Health Department. In a statement, Dr. Jones emphasized the multifaceted approach of public health, stating, "Public health isn’t just about giving shots and providing WIC. Those are important services that help people thrive and save lives. But public health does so much more."

The Kansas City Health Department plays a crucial role in safeguarding communities by preventing the spread of diseases, ensuring food safety, and creating healthy environments for residents to live, work, and engage in recreational activities. Dr. Jones underscored the collaborative nature of public health efforts, noting that partnerships with various sectors such as transportation, schools, businesses, and healthcare are essential for enhancing the overall well-being of all residents.

Foundational public health services, including programs addressing injury prevention, chronic disease, communicable disease, environmental health, and family health, are vital in every community. To further advance community health, the department recently launched the Doula Initiative, a program aimed at supporting Black Maternal Health by providing doula resources to expecting or planning residents. Priority for these services is given to applicants from high-need zip codes to ensure equitable access.

In line with their commitment to promoting awareness and addressing root issues that hinder healthful living, the Kansas City Health Department is organizing events such as the "Black Maternal Health Symposium" and the "Sista Doula" movie screening and panel. These initiatives aim to shed light on challenges related to access to healthy foods, transportation, and affordable healthcare, emphasizing the importance of targeting root causes rather than reacting to individual outcomes.

The Doula Initiative program and Maternal Health events align with the department's vision of fostering a healthier and more equitable city. Recognized as a priority issue by various healthcare organizations and authorities, including the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, these initiatives are integral components of the Health Department's Community Health Improvement Plan and Community Health Assessment.

Through its proactive and community-driven approach, the Kansas City Health Department continues to prioritize public health initiatives that support the well-being of all residents and contribute to building a healthier and more equitable city.
